Vrygrond Library Park Project

Vrygrond Library Park Mission 2023

Partnered with Chic Mamas Do Care & True North, we aim to collect over R430,000 to upgrade the library facilities and uplift the impoverished & neglected community of Vrygrond, Cape Town, South Africa.

With a population of nearly 50,000 people, Vrygrond is a congested & violent area where children need a safe place to play. More than half (59.2%) of the population have been victims of crime (whererainbowsmeet.org, 2020). Many of the inhabitants have experienced robbery, hijacking, deliberate damage to property and sexual assault/rape.

Pre-schools in the community are seriously limited in terms of space and this means few pre-schools can offer their children adequate space to run, climb and play. What most of us took as a given as kids. Instead, they need to go on outings to public parks in order to play. Unfortunately, these parks are in terrible condition, are vandalised and unsafe. They are also commonly frequented by teenagers & young adults and are not safe for children. Play equipment installed would be designed for pre-school children aged 5 and under to use with adult supervision.

This project was created by True North & is supported by the Vrygrond ECD Forum from within the community.
